Colombia’s left-wing President Gustavo Petro has issued a public statement advocating for a “transparent vote count” in Venezuela amidst widespread protests following the disputed election. The country has experienced days of unrest and the opposition has asserted allegations of electoral fraud, leading to heightened tensions.

President Petro utilized social media to urge the Venezuelan government to allow the electoral process to conclude in a peaceful manner and to conduct a transparent vote count under international supervision. He stressed that such a protocol would help pacify demonstrators and prevent further violence and loss of life.

In the midst of the turmoil, opposition leaders have denounced the official election results as fraudulent, presenting evidence in support of their candidate, Edmundo Gonzalez, having actually emerged victorious against President Nicolas Maduro. The protests have drawn tens of thousands of Venezuelans to the streets, resulting in clashes with law enforcement and resulting casualties.

Despite the National Electoral Council (CNE) of Venezuela officially declaring Maduro as the winner of the election, the opposition contends that they possess access to approximately 90 percent of vote tallies demonstrating their candidate’s significant lead. They identified a range of issues within the electoral process, inclusive of biased conduct by the CNE in favor of Maduro.

The group underscored the absence of transparency in the announcement of results, expressing concern over the limitations imposed on the opposition and the unequal conditions of the campaign.
