In a recent development, it has been reported that Brazil has taken steps to safeguard the embassies of Argentina and Peru in Venezuela. This action comes in the wake of the strained relations between Venezuela and the two South American nations.

According to statements from Venezuelan Foreign Affairs Minister Yvan Gil, Brazil has assumed the responsibility of representing the interests of Argentina and Peru in Venezuela, following the breakdown of diplomatic relations with these countries. This decision was made in accordance with the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1961 and the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations of 1963, two crucial international treaties governing diplomatic and consular relations between countries.

As part of the agreement, Brazilian diplomats will safeguard the assets and archives of the diplomatic missions of Argentina and Peru in Venezuela. Furthermore, Brazil will also act as the representative of the interests of these countries and their citizens through its embassy in Caracas, commencing from August 1, 2024.

This development comes on the heels of the Venezuelan government’s demand for the immediate withdrawal of the diplomatic corps of several countries, including Argentina and Peru, along with Chile, Costa Rica, Panama, the Dominican Republic, and Uruguay. The demand was made in response to what the Venezuelan government termed as “interventionist actions and statements” made by officials from these countries regarding the Venezuelan presidential elections that took place on July 28.

In these elections, the candidate of the Great Patriotic Pole, President Nicolas Maduro, secured his re-election with 51.95 percent of the votes, while the far-right candidate, Edmundo Gonzalez, obtained 43.18 percent.

The involvement of Brazil in safeguarding the embassies of Argentina and Peru in Venezuela underscores the complex diplomatic landscape in the region and the need for diplomatic representation even in times of strained relations.
