Taiwan’s Struggle at Paris Olympics Goes Beyond Athletics

The Taiwan team at the Paris Olympics has garnered attention not only for their athletic prowess but also for the challenges faced by Taiwanese fans. Reports have surfaced of restrictions imposed on Taiwanese fans, including the confiscation of their signs by security personnel and other spectators, resulting in global interest.

An incident during the badminton men’s doubles semifinal captured one Taiwanese fan’s green towel with the word Taiwan being confiscated by a security guard. Additionally, a suspected Chinese national tore a Taiwanese woman’s Taiwan-shaped poster from her hands, sparking concern and prompting the Taiwanese Foreign Ministry to urge French authorities to investigate.

These instances serve as a reminder of the ongoing pressure placed on Taiwan by China. This pressure encompasses China’s continuous suppression of Taiwan’s international space and recognition, extending to the realm of sports. As part of a compromise with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to participate without political symbols, Taiwan competes under the name “Chinese Taipei” at the Olympics.

Even the Taiwanese spectators are subject to the restrictions outlined in rule 50 of the Olympic Charter, which prohibits any demonstration or political propaganda at Olympic venues. Nevertheless, Taiwanese fans have shown resilience and ingenuity in finding ways to support their athletes.

Some spectators have discreetly shown their support using images of bubble tea and Mandarin characters. However, others have faced challenges, as their signs and attire bearing the word “Taiwan” have been confiscated or covered up by security personnel.

Despite these obstacles, Taiwanese spectators have found solidarity from foreign spectators and have used moments like the men’s doubles final victory to proudly chant “Team Taiwan” and sing along with the anthem.

The unwavering support and perseverance displayed by Taiwanese fans underscore their determination to overcome challenges and spotlight Taiwan’s distinct identity on the global stage. Their efforts have not gone unnoticed, as they have garnered sympathy and solidarity from others at the Paris Olympics.
