Remembering the Russia-Georgia War: Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Commemorates the 16th Anniversary

The Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs recently released a statement commemorating the 16th anniversary of the Russia-Georgia war in 2008. Unlike in previous years, the statement was issued on August 8 instead of August 7.

Within the statement, the Georgian MFA highlighted Russia’s continued occupation of two crucial regions of Georgia – Abkhazia and Tskhinvali. This occupation is a clear violation of the EU-brokered ceasefire agreement of August 12 and demonstrates a blatant disregard for international law.

The Ministry also expressed concern about Russia’s establishment of military bases, regular military exercises, and construction of barriers in the occupied regions. These actions, coupled with the killing of Georgian civilians and illegal detentions, have escalated the security and humanitarian situation in the affected areas.

Moreover, the Georgian MFA emphasized the Kremlin’s hindrance of unrestricted access for international organizations and the deployment of international security arrangements on the ground. Russia’s efforts to integrate Abkhazia and Tskhinvali region into its political, military, economic, and social systems have further isolated the population living in these occupied territories.

The Ministry reaffirmed Georgia’s unwavering commitment to resolving the conflict peacefully through diplomatic and legal means, with the support of international partners. It highlighted Georgia’s active participation in the Geneva International Discussions, which aim to foster reconciliation and rebuild trust to establish a shared European future.

Additionally, the statement underscored the strong support of the international community for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. It called on the Kremlin to respect Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, fulfill its obligations under the EU-mediated 12 August 2008 Ceasefire Agreement, and withdraw its forces from Georgian territory.

Furthermore, the Ministry extended condolences and sympathies to the families of those who lost their lives in the war. The statement was released amidst various events and remarks surrounding the 16th anniversary of the war, underscoring the significance of acknowledging such historical milestones.

As Georgia continues its efforts towards resolution and reunification, it is imperative for the international community to support these endeavors and advocate for peace and stability in the region.

The Ministry’s commemoration serves as a reminder of the war’s impact and the ongoing efforts to address the lasting challenges resulting from the conflict. This anniversary presents an opportunity to reflect on the past while striving for a peaceful future for all affected by the Russia-Georgia war.
