China Shows Support for Iran’s Defense of National Security, According to Foreign Minister
In a recent telephone conversation, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi conveyed China’s support for Iran in safeguarding its “sovereignty, security and national dignity.” The call, which took place on Sunday, involved deliberations on the recent killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on July 31. Wang denounced the attack, asserting that it encroached upon Iran’s sovereignty and posed a threat to regional stability.
Both Iran and the Palestinian group Hamas have implicated Israel in the strike that led to Haniyeh’s demise. Despite these allegations, Israel has neither confirmed nor denied its involvement in the incident. This development has raised concerns that the conflict between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip could escalate into a broader Middle East conflict.
Subsequent to the assassination, Iran has vowed to retaliate against Israel, pledging to “harshly punish” the country for its actions. Wang communicated to Ali Bagheri Kani, Iran’s Acting Foreign Minister, that the killing of Haniyeh has directly undermined the negotiation process for a ceasefire in Gaza and has destabilized peace and stability in the region, as reported by China’s foreign ministry.
The official statement from China’s foreign ministry also quoted Wang as expressing, “China supports Iran in defending its sovereignty, security, and national dignity in accordance with the law, and in its efforts to maintain regional peace and stability, and stands ready to maintain close communication with Iran.”
In another development, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian announced the nomination of Abbas Araqchi as the country’s foreign minister. Araqchi previously served as Iran’s chief negotiator in nuclear talks from 2013 to 2021.
As tensions in the region continue to escalate, China’s declaration of support for Iran’s defense of its national security offers insight into the intricate web of international relations. The affirmations made by Wang Yi indicate China’s dedication to upholding regional stability and peace, aligning with its diplomatic stance on global affairs.
In conclusion, the expressed solidarity between China and Iran underscores the significance of upholding international law and preserving the security and dignity of nations. As diplomatic discussions unfold and geopolitical dynamics evolve, the role of major powers like China in mediating conflicts and safeguarding peace becomes increasingly critical.
