India’s Para Athletes Gear Up for Paris 2024 Paralympics
India is poised to make a significant impact at the Paris 2024 Paralympics, with a total of 84 para athletes having qualified for the prestigious event. This marks the largest-ever contingent sent to the Paralympic Games by the country. Taking place from August 28 to September 8, the Paris Paralympics will feature India’s participation in 12 sports, including three new additions – para cycling, para rowing, and blind judo.
The Indian contingent, which previously comprised 54 athletes at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, has now expanded to 84 participants for the Paris games. Notably, there has been a significant increase in the number of female athletes comprising the team. This development underscores India’s growing strength and commitment to supporting its para athletes.
Among the noteworthy competitors representing India at the Paris 2024 Paralympics is Arshad Shaik, who will be competing in the men’s C2 para cycling events. Jyoti Gaderiya is also set to participate in the women’s C2 para cycling events. In the discipline of blind judo, Kapil Parmar and Kokila will be showcasing their exceptional skills and determination in their respective categories. Additionally, Anita and K. Narayana will demonstrate their prowess in the PR3 mixed doubles sculls in para rowing, further consolidating India’s strong presence across a variety of sports.
The Tokyo 2020 Paralympics marked a significant milestone for India, with the country securing 19 medals, including five gold, eight silver, and six bronze. Notably, Avani Lekhara, who won gold in the women’s R2 10m air rifle standing SH1 event, will be returning for the Paris games. Her historic victory at the previous Paralympics solidified her status as a trailblazer for Indian para sports.
Sumit Antil, the reigning gold medalist in the men’s F64 javelin throw and a two-time world champion, will also be back in action at Paris 2024. With a world record to his name, his presence on the international stage epitomizes excellence and unwavering determination. Bhavina Patel, who made history by winning India’s first Paralympic medal in table tennis, is poised to showcase her exceptional skill in the women’s singles event, and will also be competing alongside Sonalben Patel in the women’s doubles category.
Furthermore, Harvinder Singh, the first Indian archer to secure a medal at the Paralympics, is slated to participate in the men’s individual recurve open and mixed team recurve open in the ST category, infusing the event with his remarkable talent and sportsmanship.
