The ongoing dispute over territorial claims in the South China Sea has once again reached a critical point, with the Chinese coastguard accusing their Philippine counterparts of engaging in a deliberate and dangerous collision near the contentious Sabina Shoal. Chinese coastguard spokesperson Gan Yu issued a stern warning to the Philippines, urging them to cease their infringement and provocation to avoid facing severe consequences. The Chinese side has released two short videos of the incident, alleging that the Philippine vessel ignored warnings and intentionally rammed into their vessel.

According to the Chinese coastguard’s account of the events, the Philippine vessels entered the waters off Sabina Shoal, known as Xianbin Reef in China and Escoda Shoal in the Philippines. The collision occurred at 3:24 am when the Philippine vessel No. 4410 allegedly ignored the repeated warnings from the Chinese coastguard.

In response, the Chinese coastguard took control measures against the Philippine vessel, citing their right to enforce the law within the waters under China’s jurisdiction. This incident has further strained the already tense relationship between the two countries, especially in light of the competing claims over Sabina Shoal and Second Thomas Shoal. The Chinese coastguard has also accused the Philippine side of repeatedly provoking trouble and violating a temporary agreement reached last month regarding the delivery of supplies to a Philippines-controlled ship grounded at Second Thomas Shoal.

These allegations have only added fuel to the fire, intensifying the ongoing territorial dispute between China and the Philippines in the South China Sea. The collision near Sabina Shoal has heightened tensions between the two countries, adding to the complexity of the already contentious situation in the South China Sea.
