China Asserts Commitment to Resolute Action in South China Sea Dispute with the Philippines
China has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining “forceful measures” in the South China Sea in the wake of a recent clash between Philippine and Chinese vessels near a disputed reef. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning condemned the actions of the Philippine vessels in response to the collision, stating that they had “seriously violated China’s sovereignty”. She further emphasized that Beijing “will continue to take resolute and forceful measures in accordance with the law to safeguard its territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests”.
The incident has once again elevated tensions in the already volatile South China Sea, a region known for its complex territorial disputes among multiple countries. Both China and the Philippines have laid claim to the resource-rich waters, leading to frequent confrontations and diplomatic standoffs.

The Philippine Coast Guard reported that around 220 Chinese vessels, including fishing boats and maritime militia, were spotted near the reef in early March, raising concerns about China’s expansive presence in the region.

In response to the latest incident, the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs filed a diplomatic protest against China’s “incessant deployment, prolonged presence, and illegal activities of Chinese maritime assets” in the vicinity of the reef. The United States has also expressed its support for the Philippines, with the State Department reiterating America’s commitment to the 1951 Mutual Defense Treaty with the Philippines.
