Neeraj Chopra’s Missed Opportunity at Paris Olympics 2024: A Paralympic Medalist’s Perspective
Indian athlete Neeraj Chopra made a significant impact at the Paris Olympics 2024 men’s javelin event, achieving a season-best throw of 89.45m. Despite this impressive performance, Neeraj fell short of the gold medal, as Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem claimed the top spot with a remarkable 92.97m throw, setting a new Olympic record. The outcome raised questions regarding the factors contributing to Neeraj’s last four fouls during crucial attempts.
In a recent interview with the Times of India, three-time Paralympic medalist Devendra Jhajharia offered insights into Neeraj’s performance, attributing the fouls to the pressure of attempting to surpass Nadeem’s extraordinary effort. Jhajharia explained that Neeraj exerted additional effort in his throws in an effort to outperform Nadeem, ultimately leading to the fouls.
Jhajharia noted, “When Nadeem threw 92.97 meters, there was, of course, pressure on Neeraj. He threw over 89 meters. In his remaining four attempts, Neeraj wanted to throw over 93 meters. Neeraj knew he had already thrown over 89 meters and was in second position, and another 89-meter throw wouldn’t have made any difference. He wanted to throw over 93 meters and put in extra effort so that he could beat Nadeem. His extra effort resulted in four fouls. For outstanding performances, you need to put in extra effort.”
Despite the disappointment in Paris, Neeraj’s exceptional track record, including securing the gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics, instills hope for future successes. With the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles on the horizon, Neeraj has the potential to achieve a sensational hat-trick of medals. When questioned about Neeraj’s prospects in 2028, Jhajharia expressed confidence in the young athlete, describing him as “very passionate” and predicting that he will indeed secure a third Olympic medal.
“I have seen Neeraj grow up. I have also trained with him. He is a very passionate sportsperson. He is crazy about javelin. He is so focused, very humble. I am sure he is going to make a hat-trick of Olympic medals in Los Angeles,” Jhajharia remarked.
As Neeraj Chopra continues to establish his presence in the world of athletics, his dedication and talent indicate that the Paris Olympics 2024 may have been a missed opportunity, but certainly not the end of his journey to Olympic success. With his sights set on the 2028 Olympics, there is anticipation and excitement surrounding the potential for Neeraj to secure yet another medal, further solidifying his status as a champion in the world of javelin throwing.
