The Making of the Olympic Experience in Paris 2024: ISB’s Role in Shooting and Modern Pentathlon Production
The recent Paris 2024 Olympics experienced a remarkable turnout of spectators, a subject that Ursula Romero, the managing director at International Sports Broadcasting (ISB), emphasized as the highlight of the Games. It is noteworthy that every venue was consistently filled, marking a significant improvement from previous Games. ISB’s proficient team was present throughout the duration of the Games, with Romero overseeing quality control at the IBC and participating in the coverage of various sports, including shooting, equestrian, modern pentathlon, rugby sevens, hockey, breaking, 3X3 basketball, and surfing for Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS).
Throughout the Games, ISB was responsible for producing the live OBS feed for shooting and modern pentathlon, under the leadership of David Taunton and a team of approximately 30 individuals. Despite the non-overlapping schedules of shooting and modern pentathlon, the ISB team had to work diligently to ensure a seamless transition between the two events. Romero reflected on the challenging one-day turnover between the competitions, noting the toll it took on the venue team.
The shooting competition, which took place at the Chateauroux Shooting Centre, presented its unique set of challenges. The venue’s remote location, nearly three hours away from central Paris, made it challenging to capture the essence of the Olympic spirit due to its relative isolation. Additionally, the modest appearance of the venue posed a difficulty in creating a visually appealing broadcast. However, the unexpected spotlight brought by Turkish silver medalist Yusuf Dikec garnered significant attention for the sport.
On the other hand, the modern pentathlon at Versailles offered a striking contrast, with its expansive layout and picturesque backdrop. The Château de Versailles provided a stunning setting for the pentathlon’s five sports, showcasing the elegance of equestrian dressage and jumping, fencing, swimming, and laser run events.
Romero emphasized the challenges faced by the team during the modern pentathlon, particularly the swift venue transition from equestrian sports to modern pentathlon setups. Despite the technical intricacies and demanding camera movements required for effective coverage, the team managed to deliver an exceptional end product.
Gender diversity was another noteworthy aspect of ISB’s team at the Olympics, which included women serving in various key roles. Romero expressed pride in the diversity and collective efforts of the team, such as camera operators, vision mixers, spotters, and producers, hailing from different countries.
Looking ahead, ISB is preparing for the Paralympics, where they will play a pivotal role in producing various events, including the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, para athletics, para track cycling, equestrian, para shooting, para archery, wheel chair rugby, and judo.
