Countdown to the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games
The eagerly anticipated Paralympic Games are poised to commence in Paris next week, showcasing the top-tier athletes’ prowess in 22 adaptive sports. Some of these sports, such as Boccia and Goalball, are exclusive to the Paralympics, while others, like sitting volleyball and wheelchair fencing, mirror their Olympic counterparts with a unique twist. As the games approach, we will delve into the world of Team USA, explore the standout athletes and events, and examine initiatives aimed at expanding access to adaptive sports in California, which will host the 2028 games. Furthermore, we are eager to hear from para-athletes about their passion for their respective sports.
We are privileged to be joined by esteemed guests who bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the discussion. Firstly, we have David Wharton, a distinguished sports reporter from the Los Angeles Times, covering the 2024 Olympics and Paralympics in Paris for the esteemed publication.
Next, we are honored to have Kelly Crowley, a former Paralympic athlete and medalist who achieved Gold in the women’s swimming freestyle and medley relays in Greece in 2004. She also clinched a Bronze medal in cycling in 2012 and currently coaches Team USA swimming. Kelly’s expertise extends to the realm of technology, where she has contributed to digital accessibility projects for various companies.
Joining us as well is Michael Garafola, the coordinator of Adaptive and Instructional Programs at UCLA, who has played a pivotal role in expanding access to adaptive sports.
Last but certainly not least, we have the talented Paralympic javelin thrower, Justin Phongsavanh, who will be competing in the Paris 2024 Games.
