Reflecting on the 2024 Paris Olympics: A Spectacular Closing Ceremony and Memorable Moments
The 2024 Summer Olympics have officially concluded in Paris, and the closing ceremony was a remarkable display of theatrical spectacle and rock show elements. The ceremony, which took place last night, featured intricate light displays, acrobatics, and a stunning fireworks show, as well as memorable highlights, such as Tom Cruise’s rappelling into the stadium and a performance by the French band Phoenix.
Moreover, the symbolic handoff from Paris to Los Angeles, featuring LA mayor Karen Bass, Simone Biles, and Tom Cruise, with an impressive aerial stunt, truly embodied the Olympic spirit.
The medal count saw the U.S. and China tied for the most gold medals with 40 each, while the U.S. achieved the most medals overall. However, beyond the statistics, there were several standout moments, including the victory of 21-year-old weightlifter Olivia Reeves from Chattanooga, Tenn., who secured the United States’ first Olympic gold in weightlifting in 24 years. Reeves’ remarkable accomplishment and emotional reaction left a lasting impression on those present at the South Paris Arena.
The organizers of the Paris Olympics aimed to make the games accessible to the city of Paris, and they certainly succeeded. From allowing spectators to wave to athletes on boats along the Seine River to integrating various venues into the city, the games were truly open to all. Notable examples include the beach volleyball court shadowed by the Eiffel Tower and the marathon route that passed iconic landmarks.
Many individuals, including our cohost, Juana Summers, enjoyed the city of Paris during the games. Summers noted that Paris is a beautiful city to run in, and she was joined by over 20,000 participants in the Marathon for All, which allowed them to run the exact same course as the marathoners, providing a unique and challenging experience.
The event was a festive affair, complete with a light show, live music, and enthusiastic support from the mascot of the games, truly celebrating athleticism and determination.
As we bid farewell to the 2024 Paris Olympics, we reflect on the memories created, the triumphs achieved, and the spirit of unity that permeated the games. It has been an incredible experience, and we eagerly anticipate the next chapter of the Olympic journey.
