China Increases Concerns as Civil War Instability Grows in Myanmar

China’s top diplomat recently visited Myanmar to engage in dialogue with the leader of its military government. This visit occurred amidst growing instability in Myanmar due to the ongoing civil war. The Myanmar army has faced significant challenges from various ethnic militias, particularly in the northeastern region along the border with China. The military council in Myanmar has attributed the support of these militias to foreign countries, implicating China due to its historical ties with the ethnic groups along the border.

The main objective of the visit was to discuss cooperation in maintaining stability and peace in Myanmar. During the discussions, China made it clear that it opposes any attacks by ethnic militias on areas controlled by the Myanmar army. Other topics included bilateral relations, stability in the border region, and collaboration in combating cybercrime and illegal activities.

China strongly articulated its opposition to chaos and war in Myanmar, interference in internal affairs by foreign powers, and any attempts to strain the relationship between China and Myanmar. The Chinese government also stressed the importance of ensuring the safety of Chinese personnel and projects in Myanmar.

Despite China’s close ties with the ruling military in Myanmar, it is evident that the relationship is strained due to the military’s inability to contain resistance from the militias. Analysts have suggested that China’s main concern lies with the leadership of the military regime rather than the nature of the regime itself.

The conflict intensified when powerful militia groups launched an offensive against the army in the northeast, resulting in the capture of significant territory and border crossings with China. Although a cease-fire was negotiated in January, hostilities resumed in June, leading to further territorial gains by the militias.

Experts believe that this prolonged conflict favors the resistance forces in Myanmar, and China will need to adjust its policies to safeguard its investments and strategic interests. The changing dynamics of the conflict indicate a shift away from military rule, prompting China to reevaluate its approach to the situation in Myanmar.
