In a thrilling display of athletic prowess, Eleanor Patterson and Nicola Olyslagers, both hailing from Australia, secured second and third place, respectively, in the women’s high jump event at the Lausanne Diamond League 2024, held in Switzerland on Friday. Patterson achieved an impressive season-best jump of 1.96 meters, surpassing Olyslagers, who managed to clear a height of 1.92 meters.

Eleanor Patterson, a former world champion, boasts a personal best of 2.02 meters and recently won a bronze medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics with a height of 1.95 meters. Her compatriot, Nicola Olyslagers, earned a silver medal in Paris for clearing 2.00 meters and set a remarkable national record of 2.03 meters earlier this year.

The event was won by Ukraine’s Olympic champion, Yaroslava Mahuchikh, who triumphed with a clearance of 1.99 meters. After her successful jump, Patterson expressed her joy, stating, “I am having so much fun tonight – that is what is the most important. It is great to be back in Lausanne. I competed here three years ago but did not perform well. This time, I felt energized and accomplished my season’s best.”

In addition to the high jump competition, Australian athlete Georgia Griffith placed fifth in the women’s 3000 meters with a time of 8:31.91. Griffith previously achieved a national record of 8:24.20, marking her first Diamond League victory in Oslo in June, and also reached the semi-finals at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

The women’s 3000 meters was won by Ethiopia’s Diribe Welteji, who set a personal best and meet record of 8:21.50, showcasing her incredible talent on the track.

In the men’s 1500 meters, Australian athletes Oliver Hoare and Stewart McSweyn competed, finishing in 12th and 11th places, respectively. Stewart matched his season best of 3:34.80, while Hoare clocked a time of 3:36.03, falling short of his personal best of 3:29.41. The race was claimed by Norway’s Jakob Ingebrigtsen, the Paris 2024 Olympic champion, who set a new meet record at 3:27.83.

Additionally, on Thursday, Kurtis Marschall from Australia secured a joint third place in the men’s pole vault, clearing a height of 5.82 meters. Marschall had previously placed sixth in the Olympic pole vault competition in Paris with a leap of 5.85 meters.
