Charlie Swanson of Richmond Triumphs with Gold and Silver at the 2024 Paris Olympics

In a remarkable display of athletic prowess, Richmond native Charlie Swanson has achieved significant acclaim at the 2024 Paris Olympics, returning home with both a gold and a silver medal in swimming as part of Team USA’s relay events.

At the age of 26, Mr. Swanson has realized a lifelong aspiration of competing at the Olympic Games. Speaking with 12 On Your Side reporter Sarah Chakales, he reminisced about the impactful performance of Michael Phelps during the Beijing Olympics, which served as an inspiration to many individuals within his age group.

Reflecting on his Olympic journey while seated on his family’s back porch, Mr. Swanson shared his experiences of a whirlwind summer. “Fortunately,” he remarked, “they had trust in my capabilities as I participated in the prelim relays. Admittedly, that was the most nerve-wracking aspect of the experience, given that I had never competed in an international relay, especially at this prestigious event.”

After qualifying for the 100-meter breaststroke at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Indianapolis in mid-June, where he achieved a personal best time of 59.16 seconds, Mr. Swanson went on to contribute to Team USA’s success in the preliminary relays. His efforts culminated in the acquisition of both a gold and a silver medal, marking a triumphant debut at the Olympics. “The exhilaration was immense,” he noted, recalling the camaraderie shared with his relay teammates and the joyful moments following their victories.

Mr. Swanson embarked on his swimming journey at the age of five in Richmond and developed his skills further after joining NOVA while in the eighth grade. He later swam for four years at the University of Michigan before transitioning to a professional career in the sport. “The prospect of the Olympics has always been central to our focus every four years,” he commented. He also mentioned that, while competing in international events is crucial, the aspiration for Olympic success looms at the forefront of every swimmer’s ambitions.

During his time in Michigan, Mr. Swanson formed a deep connection with another swimmer, who has now become his bride. Adding to his joy, he revealed that he proposed to her on Thursday, further enhancing the celebratory atmosphere surrounding his Olympic achievements.

As Mr. Swanson contemplates potential participation in the Los Angeles Games in 2028, he remains optimistic, stating, “Anything is possible.” However, he expressed his desire to fully savor the high of his Olympic success and to celebrate his recent engagement before returning to his commitments in Michigan.

In conclusion, Charlie Swanson’s accomplishments at the Paris 2024 Olympics not only highlight his dedication and athletic talent but also resonate as an inspiration for many aspiring athletes. His journey reminds us of the profound impact that dreams, perseverance, and unwavering support can have in the pursuit of excellence in sports.
