Keely Hodgkinson Ends Season Early Due to Injury After Olympic Triumph
Keely Hodgkinson, the reigning Olympic champion in the 800m, announced on August 21, 2024, that she will conclude her competitive season prematurely due to an injury. At just 22 years of age, Hodgkinson made history by becoming the third British woman to secure the Olympic gold medal in the 800m event, joining the ranks of Anne Packer, who achieved this feat in 1964, and Kelly Holmes, who did so in 2004. This recent victory in Paris marked her ninth triumph in as many races within the current season.
In a statement shared on her Instagram account, Hodgkinson expressed her sentiments, stating, “No more races for me. Unfortunately, I picked up a small injury, but we achieved everything I had hoped to do this year. Thank you for all the love and support! See you on the track next year.”
Initially anticipated to participate in the forthcoming Diamond League finals in Brussels this September as a frontrunner, Hodgkinson now shifts her focus to her next significant goal, which is to secure the world championship title in Tokyo in 2025.
