Paris 2024 Paralympics: A Landmark Achievement in Gender Parity and Record Participation

The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has recently announced significant advancements in gender equality for the upcoming Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, highlighting this event as a landmark for female participation in sports. The competition will feature approximately 4,400 athletes representing 168 National Paralympic Committees, including the Paralympic Refugee Team — a record number of delegations. Notably, 1,983 female athletes will participate, constituting 45% of the total competitors, surpassing the previous record of 42% achieved at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics.

This year’s event will witness enhanced representation of women across a diverse array of competitions. Women will compete in 235 out of the 549 medal events, which marks an increase of eight events compared to Tokyo 2020. Among the sports showcasing increased female participation are Para equestrian with 61 women participants, and Para powerlifting with 90 women, each outnumbering their male counterparts. Furthermore, complete gender parity will be achieved in sports such as Para badminton, Goalball, Para rowing, and Wheelchair basketball.

IPC President Andrew Parsons expressed his satisfaction with these developments, attributing the success to the IPC’s ongoing investment in programs designed to promote female involvement in sports since 2016. He commended the efforts of national and international sporting organizations that have contributed to this unprecedented achievement. Mr. Parsons stated, “The IPC constantly strives to engage with its members to advance the Paralympic Movement, and achieving both a record number of competing delegations and female athletes for the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games is fantastic news.” He further emphasized the extraordinary increase in the caliber of sport and competition alongside the rise in female representation.

As anticipation builds for the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, tickets are now available for purchase through the official Paris 2024 Games box office, allowing spectators to partake in this historic event starting at a modest price of 15 euros.
