Avinash Sable Finishes 14th in Men’s 3000m Steeplechase at Silesia Diamond League 2024
In the recent Silesia Diamond League 2024 held in Poland, Indian athlete Avinash Sable delivered a performance that did not meet expectations, finishing 14th in the men’s 3000m steeplechase event. Sable recorded a time of 8:29.96 in what was his second appearance in the Diamond League during the 2024 athletics season. From the outset, he struggled to keep pace with the leading group and could only momentarily reach 13th place at the 1200m mark before ultimately settling in 14th place among 17 competitors who completed the race.
Sable, who is the reigning Asian Games champion, previously achieved a personal best of 8:09.91, which not only secured him sixth place at the Paris Diamond League in July but also established a national record for India. The men’s 3000m steeplechase at the Silesia event was won by two-time Olympic champion Soufiane El Bakkali of Morocco, who claimed victory in a dramatic photo finish against Amos Serem of Kenya, with both athletes clocking identical times of 8:04.29. However, El Bakkali’s superior season-best edged him out by a mere three thousandths of a second. Following closely was Ethiopia’s Samuel Firewu, the defending African Games champion, who completed the race in 8:04.34.
Notably, the top six finishers from the Paris 2024 Olympics participated in this Diamond League event. Sable had previously finished 11th in the Olympic final with a time of 8:14.18. His performance in Silesia was 20 seconds slower than his personal best, which would have placed him sixth in the Diamond League event, while his Olympic time would have earned him a seventh-place finish.
As the Diamond League 2024 progresses, Avinash Sable currently stands at 14th in the overall standings for the 3000m steeplechase, having accumulated three points from the events. Only the top 10 athletes in long-distance track events qualify for the Diamond League Final. At present, New Zealand’s Geordie Beamish occupies the 10th position with seven points, indicating that Sable would have needed to secure at least a fourth-place finish in Silesia, which would have awarded him five points, to surpass Beamish.
The Diamond League Final for this year is scheduled to be held in Brussels, Belgium, in September, where only the top competing athletes will have the opportunity to contend for the title.
