Mali has officially declared a national disaster in response to the catastrophic floods resulting from relentless torrential rains. This declaration was made following an extraordinary Cabinet meeting led by Colonel Assimi Goita, the president of the transitional government of this West African nation.

According to a government statement, there have been a total of 122 flooding incidents reported across 17 regions and the Bamako district since the commencement of the rainy season up until August 22, 2024. The repercussions of these floods have been severe, impacting approximately 7,077 households and displacing around 47,374 individuals. This figure includes 14,451 men, 13,576 women, and 19,347 children. Tragically, the floods have also resulted in the loss of 30 lives in various regions.

The statement further detailed that reports of house collapses, instances of lightning strikes, and strong winds have emerged from affected areas. The government is assessing the situation and taking necessary measures to provide assistance to the victims of this disaster.

As Mali grapples with these natural calamities, it underscores the urgent need for effective disaster management strategies and community support initiatives to mitigate the impact on the affected populations.
