On August 25, 2024, it was announced that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will host a vital donor conference aimed at supporting displaced individuals and refugees in the Sahel and Lake Chad region. This significant event is scheduled for October 26, 2024, and will be orchestrated in collaboration with the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), as well as in coordination with the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

The forthcoming conference is a direct response to the severe humanitarian crisis affecting several nations, including Nigeria, Niger, Chad, Cameroon, Burkina Faso, and Mali, as reported by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA). It aims to mobilize essential resources for humanitarian and developmental initiatives that will benefit the populations affected by this crisis, particularly the displaced and refugee communities. The conference will emphasize support for the United Nations coordinated humanitarian response plans, while also striving to elevate awareness regarding the complex nature of the crisis.

Moreover, the event seeks to establish robust partnerships to enhance the effectiveness of the humanitarian response and to advocate for enduring solutions to the challenges faced by these vulnerable populations. Current estimates from the United Nations indicate that around 33 million individuals are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance and protection in the Sahel and Lake Chad region, with 11 million of these individuals being internally displaced or seeking refuge within the area. The upcoming donor conference is anticipated to play a critical role in addressing these pressing humanitarian needs and fostering a collaborative approach amongst international stakeholders.
