Ghana Coach Otto Addo Anticipates Tough Matches Against Chad and Comoros in 2026 World Cup Qualifiers
Ghana’s head coach, Otto Addo, has conveyed his expectations of formidable challenges in the forthcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Comoros. With the Black Stars looking to advance in their qualification efforts, they are scheduled to resume play in March 2025 after having participated in four qualifying matches thus far. On Matchday five, Ghana will host Chad at the Baba Yara Stadium, followed by a crucial home encounter against Comoros in October 2025 which will determine their standing in Group I.
In a recent interview with FIFA Media, Addo, who has guided Ghana through four previous World Cup tournaments, acknowledged the competitive nature of the upcoming fixtures against these teams. He emphasized the necessity for his players to maintain peak physical condition in preparation for next year’s challenges, particularly in light of the AFCON qualifying matches looming on the calendar.
“My hope is that we will continue to develop during this period because it is going to be a very tough journey. I believe that the battle for qualification will be closely contested until the final matches,” remarked Addo, who previously managed Borussia Dortmund.
The coach pointed to Comoros as a challenging opponent due to their commendable performances against both Ghana and Mali. He acknowledged their strengths while noting some weaknesses that Ghana could aim to capitalize on during the qualifiers. Furthermore, he stressed the strategic importance of the upcoming AFCON qualifying matches scheduled in September, October, and November, indicating that these games will serve as critical preparation for the World Cup qualifier clashes.
“Comoros have demonstrated their capability through their matches with us and against Mali, yet they have also displayed vulnerabilities that we hope to exploit. I am optimistic that we can utilize the AFCON qualifying matches to enhance teamwork and performance, which will be essential to overcoming these forthcoming opponents,” Addo added.
Currently, Ghana seeks to achieve their fifth World Cup appearance in the 2026 tournament hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. They stand in second place in Group I, accumulating a total of nine points from their initial four fixtures as they strive for qualification.
