Jackie Chan Named Torchbearer for Paris 2024 Paralympics Opening Ceremony

Renowned Hong Kong-born martial artist and actor, Mr. Jackie Chan, has been officially announced as one of the distinguished torchbearers for the upcoming Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. In anticipation of the event, Mr. Chan will participate in the torch relay across 50 cities in France leading up to the opening ceremony, scheduled to take place from August 28 to September 8, 2024.

The announcement, made on Sunday, indicates that Mr. Chan, aged 70, will carry the Paralympic flame in the heart of the French capital on Wednesday afternoon, mere hours prior to the commencement of the games. The organizing committee has also confirmed that French actress, Ms. Elsa Zylberstein, and esteemed dancer and choreographer, Mr. Benjamin Millepied, will join him in this significant relay.

In a departure from traditional ceremonies held within the confines of the Stade de France, the festivities will be elevated to a grand parade, traversing from the prestigious Champs-Elysees to the iconic Place de la Concorde.

The Paralympic flame, which originated on Saturday at Stoke Mandeville in the United Kingdom—recognized as the historic birthplace of the Paralympic Movement—arrived in France on Sunday, escorted by wheelchair fencing champion Ms. Emmanuelle Assmann. In a statement during the welcoming of the flame, French Minister of Sports, Ms. Amelie Oudea-Castera, emphasized the initiative’s significance: “It is all about inscribing sport in the hearts of people with disabilities.”

Following its initial reception, the flame will embark on a transformative journey, becoming twelve distinct Paralympic flames, carried by one thousand torchbearers across twelve simultaneous relays in various towns. Ultimately, these relays will unify in Paris, culminating in the opening ceremony on Wednesday.
