Nigerian Government Accredits Eight Foreign Universities for Degree Conferral
The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially accredited eight universities located in Togo and the Benin Republic, granting them the authority to confer degrees to Nigerian students. This announcement was made by the Honorable Minister of Education, Mr. Tahir Mamman, during his appearance on the popular media program, Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, on August 26, 2024. The accredited institutions include three universities from Togo and five from the Benin Republic, while other institutions remain unrecognized and thus deemed illegal.
The decision aligns with the government’s ongoing effort to uphold educational standards and protect the integrity of Nigerian degrees, especially in light of the recent revocation of approximately 22,700 certificates issued by unaccredited institutions in these neighboring countries. Mr. Mamman emphasized that this move was essential for preserving Nigeria’s academic reputation, noting that many of the revoked certificates had been obtained under fraudulent circumstances. He warned that Nigerians who have obtained degrees from these unauthorized universities could face serious repercussions, particularly those currently employed within the civil service.
The list of accredited universities in Togo includes:
1. Université De Lomé
2. Université De Kara
3. Catholic University of West Africa
In the Benin Republic, the recognized universities are:
1. Université D’Abomey-Calavi
2. Université De Parakou
3. Université Nationale Des Sciences, Technologies, Ingénierie Et Mathématiques
4. Université Nationale D’Agriculture
5. Université Africaine De Développement Coopératif
Furthermore, Mr. Mamman called upon both public and private sectors to assist in identifying individuals holding counterfeit certificates from these unaccredited institutions, reiterating the importance of safeguarding the educational standards in Nigeria.
