Sandrine Martinet: An Inspirational Journey to the Paris 2024 Paralympics
Sandrine Martinet, born in Montreuil in November 1982, has faced significant challenges throughout her life due to a visual impairment stemming from a genetic condition that affects her sight. This impairment not only limits her ability to perceive colors but also significantly reduces her visual acuity. As a child, she endured bullying and violence from her peers, leading to feelings of isolation and injustice, particularly as she struggled to keep up in a conventional school setting where reading the blackboard was a daily hurdle.
At the age of nine, Martinet discovered the sport of judo at the SVLJ club in Vincennes, where she experienced the joy of being part of a team for the first time. Initially competing against able-bodied athletes, she transitioned to Para judo at the age of sixteen. Martinet’s dedication to sports took a serious turn in 2002 when she joined the French national team, setting her sights on the Athens Paralympic Games in 2004. This event was particularly significant as it marked the inaugural inclusion of women’s Para judo. With her indomitable spirit, she achieved a remarkable accomplishment, winning a silver medal.
That same year, she met Olivier Cugnon de Sévricourt, another visually impaired athlete, who enlightened her about specialized schools for individuals with visual disabilities. Motivated by her aspirations, she enrolled at Guinot, an institution that offers preparatory programs for an official diploma in massage therapy and physiotherapy—a dream she had long held.
Martinet’s journey continued as she won another silver medal at the Beijing Paralympic Games in 2008. However, the London 2012 Games presented a dramatic twist. Competing in the semifinals of the under 52 kg category, she faced off against Lijing Wand of China, where a serious injury occurred, resulting in a broken malleolus that forced her to forfeit the match. This devastating moment, while discouraging, fueled her ambition and determination to secure a gold medal at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games. Martinet showcased her relentless perseverance and zest for life, ultimately achieving her goal of winning the gold.
Since the London Games, Martinet has encountered a formidable rival in Akmaral Nauatbek from Kazakhstan, intensifying the competition in recent years. Despite these challenges, Sandrine’s resolve to reclaim the gold medal remains steadfast. As she prepares for her sixth Paralympic Games, the Paris 2024 event represents a pivotal opportunity for Martinet to challenge Nauatbek and strive for victory once more.
