Venezuelan Election Official Raises Concerns Over Electoral Irregularities

On Monday, the sole opposition representative on the National Electoral Council (CNE) of Venezuela, Juan Carlos Delpino, raised serious concerns regarding “irregularities” observed during the recent reelection of President Nicolas Maduro, which took place on July 28, 2024. In a statement disseminated via social media, Mr. Delpino articulated that “everything that transpired before, during, and after the presidential election underscores a profound lack of transparency and accuracy in the results that have been publicly declared.”

The opposition has consistently claimed victory in the election, and this assertion has been supported by a coalition of international stakeholders, including the United States, the European Union, and multiple Latin American nations, all of whom have rejected the legitimacy of Maduro’s win. Mr. Delpino expanded on the irregularities, indicating that the series of events associated with the electoral process, coupled with the challenges faced both prior to and subsequent to the election day, have significantly diminished public trust in the integrity of the electoral system and its reported outcomes. Notably, Mr. Delpino, who is currently in hiding due to safety concerns, highlighted a disruption in the real-time transmission of voting results from polling stations, an incident that authorities attributed to a cyber-attack.

Moreover, Delpino noted that opposition monitors were forcibly removed from polling stations after voting had ceased, further casting doubt on the electoral process’s fairness. This assertion aligns with the widespread allegations surrounding the electoral integrity amid the political climate in Venezuela. It is also worth mentioning that the nation’s highest court, which is perceived to be aligned with President Maduro, formally certified his reelection for a third term, spanning six years, on Thursday.

The CNE has declined to fulfill requests for the publication of comprehensive election results, citing incidents of data corruption allegedly caused by external hackers. Given the circumstances outlined by Mr. Delpino and the broader implications for the electoral processes within Venezuela, the issue of electoral integrity remains a point of significant contention both domestically and internationally.
