Charles-Antoine Kouakou, a distinguished athlete born with an intellectual disability, epitomizes excellence and determination in para-athletics. His remarkable journey to success reached a significant peak when he secured a gold medal in the 400m dash (T20 category) during the Tokyo 2021 Paralympic Games, where he also set a new European record. This groundbreaking achievement marked him as the first athlete from the French Federation of Adaptive Sport to claim the title of Paralympic champion, thus etching his name into the annals of sporting history.
Born in 1998, Mr. Kouakou has displayed an extraordinary versatility, initially dabbling in various sports such as soccer, judo, and karate. However, it was at the age of 13, upon discovering track and field, that he truly found his calling. He began his official training by joining the Abdo 93 club in Bobigny. His exceptional talents coupled with unyielding dedication soon caught the attention of coaches, leading to his inclusion in the French para-athletics team in 2016 at just 18 years old.
Mr. Kouakou’s coach, Vincent Clarico, notes, “For him, running is a game; he does not feel pressure, which is a significant advantage in competition.” Demonstrating this unique approach, Mr. Kouakou has consistently excelled in various events, particularly in the 100m and 200m sprints. As he geared up for the Tokyo Paralympic Games, his goal was profound: to return home with a gold medal, an ambitious undertaking given the challenges posed by the final stretch of the 400m race.
In a display of outstanding athletic prowess, Mr. Kouakou successfully captured the gold medal in the 400m final with an impressive time of 47.63 seconds. Further establishing his status as a leading athlete in his field, he finished fourth in the 400m T20 during the 2023 World Para-athletics Championships, once again breaking the European record and securing his place in the upcoming Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.
With a resolute objective to defend his title at the Paris games, Mr. Kouakou is committed to rigorous training and preparation. He conveyed his determination in an interview with Ouest France, stating, “I am well prepared; I have started my competition. I will succeed, even if it is different.”
