Paris 2024 Paralympics: A Glimpse of the Opening Ceremony and Flag Bearers
The Opening Ceremony of the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games is set to occur on Wednesday, August 29, from 8:00 PM to 11:15 PM at the scenic location surrounding the Champs-Élysées and Place de la Concorde. During this prestigious event, audiences will witness the unveiling of flag bearers from various delegations as they grace the stage in this magnificent setting.
As the much-anticipated day has arrived, the opening ceremony will commence a thrilling eleven days of competition held in France’s most iconic venues. Andrew Parsons, the esteemed President of the International Paralympic Committee, expressed his excitement regarding the upcoming event during a press conference earlier today, stating, “My staff have been telling me for some time that there were going to be some surprises during the ceremony. I chose not to listen to them so that I could enjoy it to the full! I cannot wait to find out all about it.”
While audiences eagerly anticipate unexpected elements in the ceremony, it is assured that a significant segment will be dedicated to the parade of delegations. As is customary at each edition of the Paralympic Games, the names of the flag bearers have garnered considerable interest. Representing the host nation, France, will be Nantenin Keïta (Para athletics) and Alexis Hanquinquant (Para triathlon), both of whom will have the honor of being the last to enter the arena.
The procession will commence with Ebrahim Danishi from Afghanistan, who will represent Para taekwondo. Following him, each National Paralympic Committee (NPC) will participate in the parade in alphabetical order. Notable flag bearers include Edina Müller (Para canoe) and Martin Schulz (Para triathlon) from Germany, Madison De Rozario (Para athletics) and Brenden Hall (Para swimming) from Australia, and Terry Bywater (wheelchair basketball) along with Lucy Shuker (wheelchair tennis) representing Great Britain. Additionally, the Paralympic Refugee Team will be symbolized by Guillaume Junior Atangana (Para athletics), while Switzerland will be represented by both Marcel Hug and Elena Kratter, both in the discipline of Para athletics. From New Zealand, Anna Grimaldi (Para athletics) and Cameron Leslie (Para swimming) will bear the flag, and the United States will be represented by Nicky Nieves (sitting volleyball) and Steve Serio (wheelchair basketball).
The Paris 2024 Paralympic Games promises to deliver an unforgettable Opening Ceremony that celebrates the spirit of competition and inclusivity, showcasing the talent of athletes from around the globe, while underscoring the significance of the Paralympic movement.
