Alana Reid and Bayanda Walaza Triumph at World Athletics U20 Championships in Lima
In a remarkable display of athletic prowess, Alana Reid from Jamaica and Bayanda Walaza from South Africa clinched the prestigious 100m titles at the World Athletics U20 Championships held in Lima on August 28, marking a historic achievement for both athletes as they secured their first global titles.
Alana Reid demonstrated exceptional speed and tactical acumen by powering ahead from the start and maintaining her lead throughout the race, finishing with an impressive time of 11.17 seconds. This victory comes shortly after her participation in the women’s 4x100m relay at the Olympic Games in Paris 2024, where she contributed to her team’s efforts, finishing fifth.
The competition was fierce, with Adaejah Hodge of the British Virgin Islands showcasing resilience and finishing in second place with a time of 11.27 seconds, while Kishawna Niles of Barbados earned bronze with a commendable finish of 11.37 seconds. In her post-race remarks, Reid expressed her satisfaction, stating, “I am very pleased with my performance, knowing that I have been training so hard for this moment. This is something that I have been working towards since 2022. I came third in the 200m two years ago, and I told myself this is my last World Junior Championships, so I just wanted to leave with something that I can look back on.”
On the men’s side, Bayanda Walaza exhibited an equally impressive performance, exploding out of the blocks to take the 100m gold with a time of 10.19 seconds. Walaza, a newcomer at the Paris Games, was instrumental in securing a silver medal for South Africa in the 4x100m relay. He narrowly defeated Puripol Boonson of Thailand, who earned silver with a historic finish of 10.22 seconds, marking the first medal for Thailand at the World U20 Championships. Bradley Nkoana, also from South Africa, completed the podium by securing bronze with a time of 10.26 seconds.
Both Reid and Walaza’s victories not only highlight their individual talent and hard work but also signify a bright future for athletics in their respective nations as they look ahead to potential Olympic glory in 2024. Their achievements at the World U20 Championships in Lima will undoubtedly serve as a source of inspiration for aspiring athletes around the globe.
