Strengthening Public Interest Media in the Pacific Islands: A New Initiative
In July 2024, we initiated a significant project designed to tackle the urgent challenges confronting public interest media across six Pacific island nations: Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Tonga, Vanuatu, and Fiji. This endeavor builds on our previous initiatives in media development within Solomon Islands, focusing on promoting open, accountable, and diverse media at the local, regional, and national levels. The goal is to foster a healthier information ecosystem that ensures accurate, trustworthy, and engaging public interest media content reaches and engages all segments of the population.
Furthermore, we aim to enhance the resilience of audiences against misinformation and disinformation, especially as internet access continues to expand throughout the region. Historically, these Pacific islands have experienced low rates of social media engagement. However, as communities increasingly come online and start to rely on social media for information, they are exposed to the rising threat of online misinformation, compounded by a lack of digital and media literacy, rendering them particularly vulnerable.
The viability of public interest media in the region is further jeopardized by economic difficulties, with traditional revenue-generating methods, such as advertising, proving ineffective. Media outlets face high staff turnover rates, limited production capabilities, distribution hurdles, and linguistic barriers.
Rachael McGuin, Country Director for BBC Media Action in the Pacific Islands, underscored the importance of this initiative during the project launch, stating, “Trusted, public interest media are essential to democratic stability and governance in the Pacific region. People need to be informed about whom and what they can rely upon for news and information, and they must have avenues for peaceful and respectful discourse.”
Through this pivotal project, we will assist media organizations in Pacific island nations in providing reliable, impartial information and content to their audiences. We eagerly anticipate collaboration with local media partners, media associations, and other relevant stakeholders, and we express our gratitude to the UK Government for its funding support in this vital undertaking.
In 2023, BBC Media Action commenced a pilot initiative in Solomon Islands, working with the national broadcaster, SIBC, to launch the nation’s inaugural series of community debates in anticipation of the summer 2024 elections. This new project will expand upon our earlier efforts, which have also included initiatives focused on emergency reporting, climate change adaptation, and gender-sensitive journalism.
This comprehensive project in the Pacific Islands is funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, demonstrating a commitment to strengthening public interest media across the region.
