Trump Campaign Warned Against Photography at Arlington National Cemetery Prior to Altercation
In a recent incident at Arlington National Cemetery, the campaign for former President Donald Trump was reportedly cautioned against taking photographs prior to an altercation during a wreath-laying ceremony honoring the service members who lost their lives in the withdrawal from Afghanistan. A defense official, speaking anonymously due to the sensitivity of the situation, provided this information to the Associated Press.
On the preceding Monday, Trump visited Arlington at the invitation of the families of the 13 service members who tragically died in the bombing at Kabul airport three years prior. According to reports from NPR, two staff members of the Trump campaign allegedly confronted and pushed aside a cemetery official who attempted to stop them from filming in Section 60, the section designated for military interments related to Afghanistan and Iraq.
The defense official confirmed that the Trump campaign was explicitly advised about the prohibition against photography in Section 60 ahead of their visit and the subsequent altercation. In response, Arlington National Cemetery acknowledged in a statement that an incident had indeed occurred, and a report was filed; however, they refrained from disclosing further details regarding the matter. They emphasized that federal law prohibits political activities, including photography, within military cemeteries.
Steven Cheung, a spokesperson for Trump, asserted that the campaign team had been granted approval for a photographer and contended that the allegations of physical contact with the cemetery official were unfounded. He described the official involved as someone suffering from a mental health episode, suggesting that they acted improperly by obstructing Trump’s team during a solemn occasion. Chris LaCivita, another senior advisor for the Trump campaign, defended the former president’s conduct, stating that the team acted with appropriate respect for the service members honored at the site.
In contrast, officials representing Trump’s political adversary, Vice President Kamala Harris, criticized the incident, labelling it as regrettable and indicative of Trump’s focus on self-aggrandizement rather than honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Democratic Congressman Gerry Connolly called for greater transparency, urging cemetery officials to publicly disclose additional information regarding the occurrence.
While JD Vance, a key figure in Trump’s campaign, attempted to downplay the incident by characterizing it as a minor disagreement, he soon redirected focus to the broader issue of the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, criticizing Harris for her inaction regarding service members’ deaths ensuing from the attack in Kabul.
Given the significant nature of the events surrounding this incident, it is imperative that all parties involved maintain a respectful dialogue in honor of those buried at Arlington National Cemetery, where over 400,000 service members, veterans, and their families rest.
