Morteza Mehrzad: The Resilient Pursuit for Paralympic Glory Amidst Challenges
Morteza Mehrzad, the world’s second tallest man at 2.46 meters (8 ft 0.85 in), is embarking on his pursuit of a third gold medal at the Paralympics, despite facing unique challenges such as the absence of an appropriate bed during his stay at the Paralympic Village in Paris 2024. As a two-time Paralympic champion, Mehrzad represents the Islamic Republic of Iran’s sitting volleyball team and remains undeterred by the circumstances surrounding his accommodations.
According to the team’s head coach, Hadi Rezaeigarkani, while Mehrzad was provided with a special bed for the Tokyo 2020 Games, he has opted to lie on the floor this time around, responding to the lack of similar accommodations by focusing on his ultimate goal: winning another championship. Rezaeigarkani noted, “He doesn’t have a special bed, but he has got the most important aim in his mind… he has the mind to become a champion.”
The Iranian sitting volleyball team, under Mehrzad’s prowess, aims to secure its eighth Paralympic title, having already claimed seven out of nine tournaments since making their first appearance in Seoul 1988. A gold medal at Paris would mark a significant milestone for Mehrzad, who made his debut in the 2016 Rio Games, where he also set a record as the tallest athlete ever to compete in the Paralympics. His impressive journey includes winning his second gold medal at Tokyo 2020.
Rezaeigarkani, who has been instrumental in Mehrzad’s career since discovering him on a television reality show in 2011, empathizes with the challenges faced by the athlete due to his disability. Mehrzad’s medical history includes a diagnosis of acromegaly, a condition that leads to excessive growth, compounded by a bicycle accident in his teens that caused him to sustain a pelvic injury and negatively affected the growth of one leg.
The coach reflected on the years of isolation that Mehrzad endured, revealing that he had spent over a decade mostly confined to his home due to the attention his extraordinary height attracted. Rezaeigarkani noted, “Nowadays all people are going to look at him as a champion,” highlighting the transformation in public perception surrounding the athlete.
Joining the national team in 2015, Mehrzad quickly made an impact, helping Iran reclaim its position at the top of the podium after a silver finish in London 2012. His performance at Tokyo 2020 further solidified his status as a central player on the team, where he was recognized as the Most Valuable Player and Best Spiker.
While there is ongoing speculation about whether Mehrzad is the greatest sitting volleyball player in history, Rezaeigarkani maintains that his worth extends beyond accolades, emphasizing the importance of recognizing the potential within everyone. “Each person has got potential in the world and we have to discover it,” he stated.
Mehrzad’s quest for a third Paralympic gold began on August 30 with a convincing win against Ukraine in the preliminary rounds, where his contributions helped secure a three-set victory. Coach Rezaeigarkani reaffirmed the idea of teamwork, making it clear that while Mehrzad plays a pivotal role, victory relies on the collective performance of all team members.
The Iranian team remains focused on their goal of securing their eighth Paralympic crown. Rezaeigarkani expressed a hopeful sentiment that their success and the attention drawn by their star player would encourage broader participation in sitting volleyball, particularly among individuals with disabilities. “We have a mind to play interesting in order to attract so many people to sitting volleyball,” he encapsulated. With determination and preparation, the team is committed to contesting the championship fiercely, underscoring that while success is not guaranteed, their efforts over the past two years have positioned them favorably to aspire for victory.
