Reflections from Day 3 of the Paris 2024 Paralympics: Inspirational Quotes from Competitors
On Day 3 of the Paris 2024 Paralympics, several athletes shared their heartfelt sentiments about competing in this prestigious event. Mr. Charles Noakes, a participant in the SH6 category, expressed his gratitude for the robust support from the crowd, stating, “It was better than my previous match. The crowd was full. This is big for Para badminton and for France. People aren’t happy with the political situation, and seeing all those people shouting my name, being happy and enjoying themselves, was magic.”
In an emotional reflection, Ms. Helle Sofie Sagoy from SL4 noted, “I am overwhelmed with emotions. I have been eagerly waiting to compete in Paris. My coach and I have been training hard for three solid years. It means a great deal to have my family and boyfriend present to support me. It is difficult to convey how special this is within the confines of the English language.”
First-time competitor Ms. Mamiko Toyoda (SU5) shared her excitement, remarking, “It is my first time at the Paralympics and in Paris, and I am having a wonderful experience. My family came to support me, and I hope to see some of the city, particularly the Eiffel Tower and do some shopping, if time allows.”
Ms. Yuka Chokyu, who is participating in her fourth Paralympic Games, shared her enthusiasm for her event, stating, “It has been incredible to be here, especially competing in Para badminton before such an enthusiastic audience. Ms. Yu Sooyoung (WH2) expressed her elation upon reaching the semifinals, saying, “I want to thank my partner, Jeong (Jaegun). He is the optimistic one, while I tend to be more pessimistic, ha ha. I am also pleased not to be in the same group as China; their team is very strong, and there is little room for mistakes.”
Mr. Daisuke Fujihara (SL3) conveyed a sense of relief at reaching the semifinals, adding, “Now is the time for battle.”
Ms. Li Hongyan (WH2) acknowledged the influence of Liu Yutong on her, remarking, “Liu is my source of inspiration; her mental strength is remarkable. Off the court, I offer her advice, yet on the court, she guides me.”

Reflecting on his journey, Mr. Tarun Tarun (SL4), who had previously torn his ACL, revealed, “I had postponed surgery multiple times because qualifying for Paris was paramount. Mr. Subhan Subhan (SH6) elaborated on managing the challenges of participating in both singles and doubles events, stating, “I gave my best effort. Competing in both singles and doubles can be quite taxing, but I will now focus all my energy on the mixed doubles alongside Rina Marlina.”
Ms. Milena Surreau (SL4) expressed her appreciation for the supportive atmosphere, saying, “My guide dog, Eugene, has a designated space to rest while I am competing, and I genuinely love the crowd. I am accustomed to playing in front of large audiences, which is reminiscent of being at a concert.”
Lastly, Ms. Leani Ratri Oktila shared her thoughts about her family, stating, “I am enjoying my time in Paris. My son, who just turned two, is at home with my husband. We video call daily, and I eagerly await seeing him again post-Paralympics.”
In a light-hearted moment, Ms. Cathrine Rosengren mentioned her tattoo plans, stating, “After the Tokyo Paralympics, I received a tattoo and am now considering one for Paris 2024. Rather than the Eiffel Tower, which is quite common, I should schedule an appointment since tattoos are complimentary in the Paralympic Village.”
As a final reflection, Mr. Chan Ho Yuen Daniel (WH2) noted a sense of calm, declaring, “Advancing to the semifinals is a step forward toward a medal. This is my last international event, and I do not feel overly nervous or stressed.”
