Jessica Long Falls Short of Podium as Brock Whiston Triumphs in 200m Individual Medley at Paris 2024 Paralympic Games
In a closely contested event at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, the esteemed American para swimmer, Jessica Long, narrowly missed securing a podium finish in the women’s 200m Individual Medley SM8 on Sunday, September 1st. The race was ultimately won by Great Britain’s Brock Whiston, who clocked in at a remarkable 2:40.37. He edged out Viktoriia Ishchiulova, competing under the Neutral Paralympic Athlete flag, by a mere 0.28 seconds, while British swimmer Alice Tai rounded out the podium with a time of 2:41.29, claiming the bronze medal.
Although Long, a decorated athlete with an impressive total of 29 Paralympic medals—16 of which are gold—finished in fourth place with a time of 2:45.70, her performance continued to showcase her extraordinary enduring talent in the sport. Dominating the early stages of the race, Alice Tai, the world record holder, led the way through the first three legs, especially excelling in her preferred backstroke event. However, the intensity of the competition allowed others to close in, with Whiston, Ishchiulova, and Tai separated by mere milliseconds as they approached the finish line. In a thrilling conclusion, Whiston secured the gold medal, narrowly defeating Ishchiulova, with Tai finishing closely behind in third.
As Jessica Long competes in her sixth Paralympic Games, she remains on the quest for her 30th career medal. Long made her extraordinary debut at the Athens 2004 Games at the tender age of 12, where she captured three gold medals. Now, at 32 years of age, she is poised to continue her journey in Paris, with upcoming events in the 400m freestyle S8 and the 100m butterfly S8.
