U.S. Men’s Wheelchair Basketball Team Undefeated in Group Stage at Paris 2024 Paralympics

The United States men’s wheelchair basketball team concluded their group stage in the Paris 2024 Paralympics with an impressive undefeated record of 3-0, following a 76-69 victory against Australia on September 1 at the Bercy Arena. This performance underscored their goal of securing a third consecutive gold medal in the event. Star player Jake Williams delivered an outstanding performance, scoring 24 points in the match and averaging 21 points throughout the preliminary round. His teammate, Nate Hinze, commented on the team’s depth, acknowledging Williams’ contribution and the effectiveness of the second and third lineups in the latter half of the game.

This noteworthy win came just a day after the U.S. squad dominated the Netherlands, achieving a decisive 60-34 victory. The Dutch team struggled significantly, failing to make a single three-pointer and finishing 0-8 from beyond the arc, while Brian Bell emerged as the leading scorer for Team USA with 18 points.

By finishing atop Group B, the U.S. secured a place in the quarterfinals, where they will face the fourth-place team from Group A, which remains to be determined pending the conclusion of pool play. Team member Fabian Romo expressed the importance of maintaining focus as they prepare for the next stage of competition, emphasizing the need for the team to trust one another irrespective of the challenges they may face.

For Australia, the loss resulted in a fourth-place finish in their group, necessitating a match against Group A’s top team in the quarterfinals, a situation that will require exceptional performance to advance.

In a contrasting outcome, the United States women’s team faced a setback against the reigning gold medalists, the Netherlands, suffering a 69-56 defeat. The American team, limited to a shooting percentage of only 38%, struggled to maintain pace with the Dutch, who effectively capitalized on fast-break opportunities. Ixhelt Gonzalez remarked on the team’s efforts, acknowledging the need for improvement in their shooting accuracy as they prepare for their final group stage match against Japan on September 2.

In the women’s Group A standings, Great Britain concluded their play in third place with a 1-2 record. Great Britain’s loss to China was underscored by the latter’s remarkable 66% shooting accuracy, a notably high percentage in wheelchair basketball. Team member Robyn Love recognized the impressive performance of their opponents while reflecting on her team’s hesitance in facing a physically dominant opponent.

On a positive note, the British men’s wheelchair basketball team enters the final rounds with a promising record of 2-0, having secured victories over Germany and Canada, with their last group match against France scheduled for September 2. Canada’s men’s team, currently tied with Germany with a record of 1-1, looks to improve their standing in a crucial head-to-head match, while the Canadian women concluded their group play successfully with an emphatic 81-49 win over Spain, anchored by Kady Dendenau’s remarkable 36-point performance, resulting in a 2-1 record in Group A.
