China and Singapore Initiate Expanded Naval Exercises Amid South China Sea Tensions
In light of rising tensions in the South China Sea, China and Singapore have commenced a significant joint naval exercise, designated Exercise Maritime Cooperation 2024. The opening ceremony took place on Sunday at a military port in Zhanjiang, Guangdong province, as reported by the state news agency Xinhua. This exercise marks the third iteration since its inception in 2015 and promises to be longer and encompass a wider array of operations compared to its predecessors, running until Thursday.
According to Senior Colonel Wu Qian, spokesperson for the Chinese defense ministry, the exercises intend to foster mutual trust and friendship while enhancing practical exchanges between the military forces of both nations. The planned drills will include joint anti-surface strike maneuvers, replenishment-at-sea operations, search and rescue missions, and exercises focused on boarding, searching, and seizing vessels.
Kwan, a representative from the Singaporean defense ministry, emphasized the strong and amicable defense relationship encapsulated by this exercise. He articulated that Exercise Maritime Cooperation continually facilitates invaluable opportunities for the navies of both countries to learn from one another, thereby cultivating trust and friendship.
Participation in the exercise features the People’s Liberation Army Navy with its Type 054A frigate Sanya and Type 082-II minesweeper Hejian, alongside Singapore’s Formidable-class frigate RSS Stalwart, which arrived in Zhanjiang on Thursday. The array of offshore activities includes helicopter cross-deck landings, gunnery exercises, search-and-rescue operations, and various maneuvering drills, highlighting the robust and amicable bilateral defense ties between Singapore and China.
Furthermore, the two military forces have engaged in a collaborative series of counter-terrorism drills, the latest of which occurred in September of the previous year. This continued engagement underscores a commitment to developing defense capabilities amidst a backdrop of regional uncertainties, which recently included incidents between the Chinese and Philippine coastguards in the disputed Sabina Shoal.
