Venezuela Approves Extradition of Two Colombians to Russia Under Allegations of Combat Participation in Ukraine
Recent reports indicate that Venezuela has approved the extradition of two Colombian nationals to Russia, where they are alleged to have engaged in combat on behalf of Ukrainian forces. According to the Federal Security Service (FSB) of Russia, the men were detained in Caracas, the capital of Venezuela, and are identified as Alexander Ante and José Aron Medina. They were reportedly captured due to their possession of Ukrainian military uniforms during their transit through Venezuela while traveling back to Colombia.
This incident, initially reported by the Colombian newspaper El Tiempo, is significant as it represents the first known case of foreign fighters aligned with Ukraine being extradited to Russia. The authorities from Colombia, Venezuela, and Russia have yet to provide official statements regarding the situation.
A video released by the FSB purportedly shows the Colombian detainees being escorted through Lefortovo prison. The agency has initiated a criminal case against them for alleged mercenary activities, which could lead to a prison sentence of up to 15 years. However, the FSB did not disclose the specifics of the circumstances surrounding their arrest in Venezuela.
