China, Tanzania, and Zambia Sign $1 Billion Agreement to Revitalize TAZARA Railway
On September 4, 2024, an important agreement was reached between China, Tanzania, and Zambia aimed at revitalizing the Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA). This initiative seeks to enhance rail-sea transportation in the resource-dense region of East Africa and is backed by a substantial investment of $1 billion proposed by China. The signing of the memorandum of understanding transpired during the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation in Beijing, which was attended by the presidents of Tanzania, Zambia, and China’s President Xi Jinping himself.
Originally constructed with the support of Chinese and African labor between 1970 and 1975, the TAZARA railway stretches 1,860 kilometers (approximately 1,156 miles) and serves as a crucial cargo transport route, linking Zambia’s rich copper and cobalt mines to the Tanzanian coastline.
President Xi Jinping emphasized the significance of this agreement, expressing China’s commitment to utilizing this summit to advance the revitalization efforts of the railway, which will facilitate improved rail-sea intermodal transport within East Africa. Xi indicated that this partnership is envisioned to establish Tanzania as a model for deepening high-quality cooperation under the China-Africa Belt and Road Initiative, thus enhancing regional economic integration and development.
In conclusion, this memorandum marks a pivotal step in bolstering East Africa’s infrastructure and economic development through international cooperation, reflecting the continuing relationship between China and its African partners.
