Malaysia Initiates Investigation into Leak of Classified Chinese Diplomatic Note
On Wednesday, Malaysia’s foreign ministry announced its intention to initiate a police investigation and an internal inquiry regarding the recent leak of a classified diplomatic correspondence from China’s foreign ministry. This notice was confirmed after a Philippine media outlet published details of the note, which was reportedly sent to the Malaysian embassy in Beijing in February.
The Philippine news source, The Inquirer, disclosed on Thursday that the classified document consisted of two pages and indicated that China had formally protested Malaysia’s oil and gas exploration activities in the South China Sea, labeling them as infringements upon Chinese sovereignty.
Given the complex territorial claims surrounding the South China Sea, wherein China asserts dominion over vast areas based on historical references, the issue poses significant challenges for Malaysia as well as other nations such as the Philippines, Brunei, Taiwan, and Vietnam who are also engaged in energy exploration within the region.
