Paris 2024 Paralympics Update: Day 7 Medal Count with India in 20th Place
The Paris 2024 Paralympics are underway, having commenced with the official opening ceremony on August 28, 2024, with events starting from August 29 and concluding on September 8. As of Day 7, China is leading the medal tally, boasting an impressive total of 120 medals, which include 56 golds. Great Britain and the United States follow in second and third places, respectively, with 69 and 57 total medals.
India has achieved remarkable success during this edition of the Paralympics, securing a total of 21 medals, which comprise three gold, eight silver, and ten bronze, marking the country’s highest medal count in a single Paralympic Games. Notable performances from Indian athletes include Sachin Khilari, who won a silver medal in the men’s shot put F46 final with a throw of 16.32 meters. In the men’s high jump T63 event, Sharad Kumar earned silver while Mariyappan Thangavelu claimed bronze on September 3. In the men’s javelin F46 event, Ajeet Singh secured a silver medal, and Sundar Singh Gurjar contributed a bronze, while Deepthi Jeevanji added a bronze in the women’s 400m T20 event.
Sumit Antil further enhanced India’s medal tally by claiming the gold medal in the men’s javelin throw F64, setting a new Paralympic record with a throw of 70.59 meters. Nitesh Kumar won gold in the men’s singles SL3 category for para badminton. The achievements continued with Thulasimathi Murugesan and Manisha Ramadass winning silver and bronze, respectively, in the women’s singles SU5 event, and Nithya Sre garnering a bronze medal in the women’s singles SH6 after defeating Rani Marlina from Indonesia, bringing India’s count to a total of 15 medals at that point.
On Day 7, Yogesh Kathuniya captured silver in the men’s discus F56 final. Although Suhas Yathiraj competed valiantly, he fell short in the gold medal match of the men’s singles SL4 category against Lucas Mazur. Additionally, the Indian para archery team, represented by Sheetal Devi and Rakesh Kumar, triumphed over Italy’s Eleonora Sarti and Matteo Bonacina, securing a bronze medal in a tightly contested match. This victory marked India’s second para archery medal, following Harvinder Singh’s bronze in the Tokyo Games.
Further contributing to India’s achievements were Nishad Kumar, who won silver in the men’s high jump T47 final, and Preethi Pal, who earned bronze in the women’s 200m T35 event. India also excelled in shooting with four medals secured, including Avani Lekhara’s gold in the women’s 10m air rifle standing SH1 and Mona Agarwal’s bronze in the same event. Manish Narwal and Rubina Francis added silver and bronze medals, respectively, in the men’s 10m air pistol SH1 and P2 Women’s 10m Air Pistol SH1 events.
The current edition of the Paris Paralympics features an impressive cohort of approximately 4,400 athletes from around the globe, competing across 549 medal events in 22 sports.
