Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone to Conclude Season with Unique 200m-400m Double at 2024 Diamond League Final
Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, the reigning champion in the women’s 400m hurdles, is poised to conclude her international track and field season in an unconventional manner at the 2024 Diamond League Final, scheduled to take place in Brussels from September 13 to 14. The American athlete, who recently set a remarkable world record of 50.37 seconds in the 400m hurdles during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games final (pending ratification), will participate in a flat 400m race and a 200m race at this prestigious event.
Remarkably, despite her absence from any Diamond League meet throughout this season, the organizers have graciously offered McLaughlin-Levrone wildcard invitations to compete in Brussels. She will first run the 400m flat on Friday, September 13, followed by the 200m race the subsequent day. This marks only her second outing in the 400m flat and third appearance in the 200m distance this year. Additionally, McLaughlin-Levrone contributed to Team USA’s gold medal victory in the women’s 4x400m relay at the Stade de France.
Throughout her career, McLaughlin-Levrone has demonstrated considerable skill in the 400m flat, achieving a personal best of 48.74 seconds at the 2023 USATF Outdoor National Championships, which ranks her as the 12th-fastest woman ever in the event. Conversely, her participation in the 200m distance has been more infrequent. Prior to her two races this season, where she recorded a personal best of 22.07 seconds, her last competitive half-lap was in 2018 during her collegiate tenure. Her 22.07-second performance at the USATF Los Angeles Grand Prix places her in a tie for 54th on the all-time list for the distance.
In conclusion, while the 200m and 400m flat races may not be McLaughlin-Levrone’s primary events, her participation in the Diamond League Final provides an opportunity for her to showcase her versatility and talent as an elite athlete. As she prepares for these races, fans and analysts alike will be keen to observe her performance and the potential impact on her future career endeavors.
