We Are Pi Launches Trailer for “Crois Pas Qu’on Dort”: An Inspirational Tale of Olympic Aspirants
We Are Pi has unveiled the trailer for “Crois Pas Qu’on Dort” (translated as “Don’t Think We’re Sleeping”), an inspiring documentary set to capture the remarkable journeys of three young French athletes in anticipation of the Paris 2024 Olympics and Paralympics. This 90-minute feature film, developed in conjunction with Nike, is scheduled to premiere in January 2025, followed by a theatrical release later that month.
The film chronicles the lives of three protagonists hailing from Paris and its suburbs: Charles-Antoine, a runner with an intellectual disability who clinched a Gold medal at the Tokyo Paralympics and will also participate in the upcoming Games; and twin sisters Leyna and Maysane, heirs to their family’s taekwondo legacy, who, coached by their father, aspire to represent France in this discipline at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Over five years, a dedicated film crew documented the evolving narratives of these athletes, merging the authenticity of their daily lives with the ambition of their athletic pursuits, culminating in their participation in the historic event.
The inception of “Crois Pas Qu’on Dort” dates back to 2017, involving extensive casting that evaluated around 500 athletes before selecting the main characters. Directed by Nick Walters and Lou Marillier, the film offers a nuanced portrayal of the athletes’ lives, showcasing their personal experiences alongside their sporting endeavors, a process made possible by the filmmakers’ unprecedented access to their private and professional spheres. The film was shot across 12 countries, facilitated by a production team exceeding 250 members, including many from under-represented backgrounds.
In collaboration with Nike, We Are Pi launched the Crois Pas Qu’on Dort Pledge aimed at creating opportunities for under-represented filmmakers, thereby reflecting the diverse communities engaged in this project. The directors expressed their desire to present a coming-of-age narrative that resonates with viewers, emphasizing the significance of sport as a transformative experience.
Alex Bennett-Grant, the founder and Executive Producer of We Are Pi/Pi Studios, reaffirmed the film’s importance, labeling it a story of hope for those often marginalized and a testament to the unifying power of sport. “This is the most important story we have ever told, highlighting the transformative capacity of sport to transcend barriers,” he stated.
Furthermore, music plays an integral role in the film, featuring an exclusive original track from renowned French hip-hop artist Tiakola, alongside contributions from composers Para One and Sam Tiba. This soundtrack is designed to resonate with the youth of France, reinforcing the film’s themes of aspiration and achievement.
In conclusion, “Crois Pas Qu’on Dort” aims not only to document the athletes’ journeys but also to inspire a new generation by illustrating the profound impact of commitment and passion in the pursuit of dreams. The film’s premiere at La Grand Rex cinema in Paris in mid-January will herald its release, which is anticipated to engage and motivate audiences across the nation.
