Australia’s Impressive Medal Tally on Day 7 of the Paralympic Games
On Day 7 of the Paralympic Games, Australia showcased remarkable achievements, highlighted by notable individual performances that secured several medals across various sports.
In the gold medal category, Alexa Leary emerged as a standout swimmer, claiming victory in the women’s 100m freestyle S9. Leary not only secured her podium finish but also shattered the world record she had established earlier that day, thus marking a remarkable achievement in her debut Games. Additionally, Yang Qian defended her title in table tennis, demonstrating exceptional skill by defeating Natalia Partyka of Poland with a decisive score of 3-0 in the women’s singles S10 event.
Australia also witnessed commendable performances in the silver medal category. Lauren Parker, who triumphed in triathlon earlier in the event, narrowly missed a second gold as she finished the women’s H1-3 individual time trial just 9.50 seconds behind American Katerina Brim. Similarly, Meg Lemon improved upon her previous bronze with a silver medal in the women’s C4 individual time trial, although she could not overcome the pace set by Samantha Bosco from the USA. Alistair Donohoe, a seasoned competitor in cycling, secured silver once again in the men’s C5 individual time trial, albeit behind Daniel Abraham of the Netherlands.
The Australian contingent also celebrated several bronze medal victories. Alana Forster earned her first-ever Paralympic medal in the women’s C5 individual time trial, a poignant accomplishment given her recovery from a life-threatening accident two years prior. In men’s cycling, Darren Hicks finished third in the C2 individual time trial after a fierce competition, while Ricky Betar, competing in the men’s 200m individual medley S14, concluded the race in third position, despite a promising start. Grant Patterson rounded out the medal achievements by securing a bronze in the men’s 50m breaststroke SB2, expressing his determination to continue competing until the Brisbane 2032 Paralympic Games.
Other competitive highlights of the day included sprinter Mali Lovell’s personal best in the 100m T36, along with Taymon Kenton-Smith’s extraordinary run in archery, where he demonstrated remarkable skill by defeating higher-ranked opponents before placing fourth overall. In boccia, the mixed pairing of Jamieson Leeson and Dan Michel faced elimination in the quarter-finals, while the Australian wheelchair basketball team, the Rollers, bounced back from a recent setback with a hard-fought 78-74 victory against Spain in their classification match.
Reflecting on the day’s outcomes, Alistair Donohoe remarked, “I did not come here for silver. If I were a vampire, given the amount of silvers I have, I would be deceased.” Furthermore, Ricky Betar’s father, Drew, expressed pride in his son’s achievement, saying, “We faced a lot of criticism in his younger years, so to see him now – winning a medal – I am immensely proud.”
The current medal standing positions Australia ninth overall in the rankings, with a total of 41 medals comprising 11 gold, 12 silver, and 18 bronze medals.
