China Excels in Powerlifting at Paris 2024 Paralympics as Guo Lingling Sets New World Record
During the first day of powerlifting at the Paris 2024 Paralympics, the Chinese women showcased exceptional performance, with Guo Lingling breaking her own world record in the up to 45kg class. The 35-year-old athlete raised her bench press record from 121 kg, previously set in February, to an impressive 123 kg, securing her victory ahead of Britain’s Zoe Newson, who lifted 109 kg.
Lingling’s outstanding achievement contributed to China’s leading position in the overall medal standings, drawing applause from a spirited yet partially filled La Chapelle Arena. “I am very excited and happy, and the atmosphere at the stadium was also very inspiring to me,” remarked Lingling. She further expressed her belief that China’s substantial investment in training young athletes is a crucial factor in maintaining its dominance in the gold medal tally.
On the same day, compatriot Cui Zhe achieved a remarkable feat by setting a Paralympic record in the up to 41kg category. At 38 years old, Zhe obtained the gold medal by lifting nearly three times her own weight, totaling 119 kg, successfully overcoming a series of four silver medals earned in previous Paralympic Games. “I have always had faith in myself and believed that I could get the gold,” Zhe stated, emphasizing her unwavering determination throughout her journey to become a Paralympic champion.
In the men’s division, Jordan’s Omar Qarada successfully defended his title in the 49kg weight class with a lift of 181 kg. Furthermore, Kazakhstan’s David Degtyarev retained his title in the up to 54kg category, narrowly surpassing Cuba’s Pablo Ramirez. “After Tokyo, I prepared myself non-stop for three years, aiming to win again. Both medals hold immense importance for me,” Degtyarev commented, highlighting his commitment to excellence.
The Paris 2024 Paralympics continues to raise expectations and excitement, as participating athletes exemplify extraordinary strength and determination in pursuit of their goals.
