Oksana Masters Clinches Eighth Gold Medal at the Paris Paralympics

Oksana Masters, an exceptional multi-sport athlete and a distinguished representative of the United States, has once again demonstrated her extraordinary prowess on the global stage by securing her eighth Paralympic gold medal. Competing at the Paris Paralympics, Ms. Masters excelled in the H4-5 women’s para-cycling time trial, where she achieved a remarkable first-place finish. Her performance outshined that of silver medalist Chantal Haenen from the Netherlands and bronze medalist Sun Bianbian from China.

At 35 years of age, Ms. Masters has now accumulated a total of 18 medals across various Paralympic Games, underlining her versatility and exceptional talent in multiple sports including cross-country skiing, biathlon, and rowing. Born in Ukraine in 1989 with significant birth defects linked to the aftermath of the Chernobyl disaster, she was subsequently adopted by an American professor and grew up in Louisville, Kentucky.

Ms. Masters’ journey in the Paralympics began in 2012, where she earned a bronze medal in rowing in the trunk and arms mixed double sculls category. Her most decorated appearance thus far occurred during the 2022 Winter Paralympics in Beijing, where she achieved an impressive medal haul of four medals in cross-country skiing and three medals in biathlon.

Looking ahead, Ms. Masters has further opportunities to expand her medal tally in Paris, as she prepares to defend her title in the H5 para cycling race on Thursday, followed by participation in the H1-5 mixed team relay on Saturday. Her achievements not only highlight her personal resilience and dedication but also serve as an inspiration to many around the world.
