Paris 2024: Day 7 Medal Highlights and Remarkable Achievements

Day 7 of the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games showcased remarkable athletic achievements across various disciplines, marking significant milestones for several competitors.

Noelle Malkamaki of the United States shattered the world record in the women’s shot put F46 event, becoming the first female shot putter to exceed 14 meters. Malkamaki expressed her excitement, stating, “I woke up this morning with the goal of reaching 14 meters. Being the 14th in the throwing order felt like a sign. I am thrilled to accomplish this today.”

In the women’s discus F41 event, Raoua Tlili of Tunisia continued her exceptional performance by securing gold, thereby completing her trifecta of titles in shot put and discus at three consecutive Games.

The distance events saw Great Britain’s Samantha Kinghorn triumph over Switzerland’s Catherine Debrunner in the women’s 100m T53, as Kinghorn, emotional after her victory, remarked, “This moment is incredibly special, especially to celebrate with my family present this time, unlike in Tokyo.”

Dutch duo Sam Schroder and Niels Vink retained their title in wheelchair tennis quad doubles, besting the United Kingdom’s Andy Lapthorne and Gregory Slade. Schroder acknowledged the importance of having followers on-site, saying, “The atmosphere today added to our achievement immensely.”

In swimming, Jessica Long of the United States marked a historic achievement by claiming her 30th Paralympic medal in the women’s 400m freestyle S8, a record she has maintained since the Athens Games in 2004. Alice Tai, who finished second, praised Long’s impact on the sport, saying, “Jessica is a phenomenal swimmer and a true inspiration for all.”

Ukraine celebrated a successful day with three gold medals at La Défense Arena. Andrii Trusov set a new world record in the men’s 50m freestyle S7, while Yaroslav Denysenko secured his first Paralympic gold in the men’s 100m freestyle S10.

Mexico’s Arnulfo Castorena, at 46, won his fourth gold in the men’s 50m breaststroke SB2, an inspiring achievement that emphasizes longevity in athletic performance.

Wheelchair fencing witnessed an intense rivalry, as Thailand’s Saysunee Jana repeated her success against China’s Xiao Rong in the women’s foil category B final. Additionally, Great Britain’s Dimitri Coutya achieved victory over Feng Yanke of China in the men’s foil category B, advancing from a previous bronze position in Tokyo 2020.

India’s Harvinder Singh made history by becoming the nation’s first Paralympic gold medalist in archery, rebounding from a ninth-place qualification to a convincing victory in the final.

In cycling, Sarah Storey and Oksana Masters successfully defended their individual time trial titles, reflecting on the significance of their achievements in the picturesque setting of Paris.

The Para powerlifting events crowned champions with Jordan’s Omar Qarada defending his title successfully while both women’s gold medals went to Chinese athletes Guo Lingling and Cui Zhe, with the latter achieving her long-cherished dream.

In equestrian, the Dutch representation shined, highlighted by Demi Haerkens’s golden debut performance. Meanwhile, Michelle George of Belgium showcased her expertise, winning her seventh medal in the sport.

Table tennis saw China’s Zhang Bian take the title against teammate Pan Jiamin, while Australia’s Qian Yang claimed gold as well, affirming her place as a leading competitor in the sport.

Lastly, in shooting Para sport, notable performances emerged including Italy’s Davide Franceschetti, who won a bronze medal and reflected on his growth from earlier struggles in the competition. Dragan Ristic successfully defended his title while Georgia’s Vladimer Tchintcharauli earned his first podium finish, illustrating the breadth of talent at this year’s Games.
