President Xi Jinping Commits Over $50 Billion to Africa’s Development in Next Three Years
On Thursday, Chinese President Xi Jinping made a significant commitment to the African continent by pledging over $50 billion in financing over the next three years. This announcement was made during a keynote address at the opening ceremony of a prominent summit in Beijing, which brought together numerous African leaders to engage in discussions about enhancing economic and political relationships between China and Africa.
In his address at the esteemed Great Hall of the People, President Xi stated, “Over the next three years, the Chinese government is willing to provide financial support amounting to 360 billion yuan ($50.7 billion).” The proposed financial assistance is composed of 210 billion yuan allocated for credit facilities, along with 80 billion yuan earmarked for various forms of assistance. Additionally, Mr. Xi emphasized the promotion of privately funded investment, with an aim for Chinese companies to invest at least 70 billion yuan in Africa, thereby stimulating the continent’s growth prospects.
Furthermore, the Chinese leader highlighted an ambitious objective of generating a minimum of one million jobs in Africa as part of this initiative. In a show of commitment to humanitarian efforts, he reaffirmed China’s pledge to offer 1 billion yuan ($140.9 million) in emergency food aid, execute 500 public welfare projects, and foster collaborative ventures between Chinese and African enterprises.
Xi Jinping underscored the strengthened ties between China and Africa, stating, “China-Africa relations are now at their best period in history,” reflecting the deepening partnership centered around Africa’s rich natural resources, which include vital minerals such as copper, gold, lithium, and rare earth elements. This momentous declaration not only signifies China’s dedication to the advancement of Africa but also reaffirms its strategic interests on the continent.
