The formation of the SASR coincided with the 21st anniversary of the Lae/Nadzab landings during World War II, which were critical in establishing a stronghold against Japanese forces in New Guinea. The successful operation involved Australian and American paratroopers and was pivotal in securing an essential airbase within the Pacific theatre.

Headquartered at Campbell Barracks in Perth, Western Australia, the SASR’s inaugural engagement occurred during the Indonesian Confrontation in Borneo in the mid-1960s. Subsequently, the unit played significant roles in various conflict zones, including the Vietnam War, the Somali Civil War, and interventions during the East Timorese crises in 1999 and 2006. Furthermore, the regiment was involved in domestic security efforts, notably in response to the 1978 Sydney Hotel bombing and the security operations of the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

However, the regiment has not been without controversy. A 2020 Australian military report accused members of the SASR of unlawful killings during their operations in Afghanistan, revealing that 39 Afghan prisoners, farmers, and civilians were reportedly killed unlawfully. The report recommended that 19 current and former soldiers face criminal investigations, casting a shadow over the regiment’s otherwise esteemed legacy.
