Nanjing Celebrates a Decade Since the Youth Olympic Games: Reflecting on Legacy and Future Aspirations

Nanjing recently marked a significant milestone celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) that took place in 2014. This inaugural event fostered the emergence of numerous athletes who have since ascended to Olympic glory, as evidenced by their performances in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Notable figures such as the 100m Olympic champion Noah Lyles, basketball gold medallist Napheesa Collier, judoka Hifumi Abe from Japan, Brazilian beach volleyball champions Ana Patricia and Duda, as well as Chinese table tennis star Fan Zhendong, all trace their roots back to this pivotal event.

The YOG Nanjing 2014 served as an influential chapter in China’s extensive legacy in the realm of sports. The games were held from August 16 to 28, featuring 3,579 athletes representing 203 National Olympic Committees (NOCs), who competed in 222 different events, many of which became stepping stones for future success on the Olympic stage. Of the athletes who participated in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, 299 had previously competed in Nanjing, showcasing the enduring impact of the Youth Olympic Games on athletes’ careers.

During the anniversary celebrations, IOC President Thomas Bach articulated the significance of hosting the second Olympic event in China, following the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, and highlighted how the event brought forth the country’s passion for sports and athletic achievement.

In preserving the legacy of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, Nanjing’s hosting of the YOG in 2014 initiated a new era for China’s sporting history, culminating in Beijing’s remarkable feat in 2022 as the first city to host both the Summer and Winter Olympic Games. As an integral part of this narrative, Nanjing’s contributions to the Olympic Movement remain profound.

The anniversary events included a YOG-themed photo exhibition and seminars featuring athletes and volunteers, as well as the “Nanjing in Paris” event coinciding with the Paris Olympic Games. The YOG Nanjing 2014 was also notable for introducing various innovative features that have since been integrated into the Olympic Games, including the return of golf, the debut of rugby sevens, and the expansion of mixed-gender team events, thus enhancing the Games’ inclusivity and diversity.

A lasting impact of the YOG can also be seen in the repurposing of its facilities for subsequent international events, including the 2016 World Roller Speed Skating Championships and the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup, among others. Furthermore, the city has fostered a culture of physical activity, launching initiatives such as the Sunshine Sports programme to ensure daily sports practice in participating schools, and organizing nearly 4,000 mass participation sports events since the conclusion of the YOG.

Looking forward, attention is now directed towards the upcoming Youth Olympic Games set to take place in Dakar in 2026. This groundbreaking event, to be held on African soil for the first time, is anticipated to promote sport as a transformative catalyst in the region while inspiring confidence among African youth. The Games, scheduled from October 31, 2026, will be conducted across multiple sites including Dakar, Diamniadio, and Saly, and are underpinned by the motto, “Africa welcomes, Dakar celebrates,” which encapsulates the spirit of collaboration and ambition among the youth of Africa.

In conclusion, the legacy of the YOG Nanjing 2014 remains influential ten years later, shaping athletic careers and contributing to a vibrant sports culture in the city, while simultaneously setting the stage for future editions of the Youth Olympic Games.
