Paris Mayor Hidalgo on Olympic Rings and Tribute to Rebecca Cheptegei

In a recent press conference, Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo clarified her proposal regarding the presence of the Olympic Rings on the iconic Eiffel Tower. She stated, “The proposal that I have made for the Rings … is a proposal that until 2028, until the Games in Los Angeles, we will leave the Rings on the Eiffel Tower. Perhaps after 2028, they’ll stay and maybe they won’t. Let’s see.”

Hidalgo highlighted that the Olympic Rings are owned by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which supports the idea of displaying its symbol on such a globally recognized monument. However, the current set of Rings is deemed too heavy for long-term placement, prompting the IOC to finance a study aimed at creating a lighter version for installation. It is expected that the IOC may cover the costs associated with the new set and its installation.

Despite some controversy surrounding her decision, Hidalgo asserts that she possesses the authority to make this determination, having been re-elected as mayor in 2020 after her initial election in 2014. The next local elections are scheduled for 2026.

In response to a request from the International Paralympic Committee, Hidalgo announced the relocation of the Parasport logo, the three Agitos, which is currently situated on the Arc de Triomphe. She indicated that it would be moved to a prominent location along the renowned Champs-Elysées avenue, central to Paris.

Additionally, Mayor Hidalgo announced a poignant tribute to Ugandan athlete Rebecca Cheptegei by naming a sports facility in her honor. Ms. Cheptegei, who placed 44th in the Olympic marathon scheduled for 2024, tragically passed away recently after sustaining severe burns from an attack described as an act of domestic violence. Hidalgo expressed, “Paris will not forget her. We’ll dedicate a sports venue to her so that her memory and her story remain among us and help carry the message of equality, which is a message inherent in the Olympic and Paralympic Games.”

The incident reveals the brutal reality faced by many and serves as a reminder of the importance of promoting equality and safety for all. The summer of sports in Paris will culminate this Sunday with the conclusion of the XVII Paralympic Games, celebrating athletic excellence while also honoring those whose lives have been affected by violence.

The city of Paris continues to embody the spirit of the Olympic Movement, focusing on inclusion, remembrance, and the commitment to an equal society, even amidst its challenges.
