Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand Shine at the Hong Kong Open 2024 Badminton Tournament
In an impressive display of skill at the Hong Kong Open 2024 badminton tournament held in Kowloon, Hong Kong, India’s Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand advanced to the round of 16 in the women’s doubles event on Tuesday. The Indian duo exhibited remarkable proficiency by triumphing over the Ukrainian pair of Polina Buhrova and Yevheniia Kantemyr in straight sets, securing a decisive victory with scores of 21-14 and 21-13.
As they progress, Jolly and Gopichand are set to face formidable opponents Liu Shengshu and Tan Ning from the People’s Republic of China, who are distinguished as silver medalists from the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Conversely, the other Indian women’s doubles team, comprised of Rutaparna Panda and Swetaparna Panda, was unable to proceed in the tournament after suffering a defeat to Hsieh Pei-Shan and Hung En-Tzu of Chinese Taipei, with the match concluding at 21-11 and 21-8.
In the men’s singles category, Indian players Chirag Sen and Manav Choudhary faced challenges during the qualification round. Both athletes managed to win their opening matches; however, they fell short in their second encounters. Chirag Sen recorded a convincing victory against Canada’s Lai Yin Chung, with scores of 21-12 and 21-10, but was subsequently eliminated by Xiaodong Sheng of Canada, who won with scores of 12-21, 21-13, and 14-21. Similarly, Manav Choudhary bested Oleksii Titov of Ukraine with a score of 21-14, 21-19, but was subsequently defeated by the host country’s Chan Yin Chak, in a match that ended at 21-6, 21-10.
Additionally, the men’s doubles team of Vaibhaav and Ashith Surya was also eliminated in the qualification round, succumbing to Lui Chun Wai and Kuei Chun Hung of Hong Kong, China, with a score of 21-15 and 21-9.
Looking forward, Indian badminton players Priyanshu Rajawat and Kiran George, ranked 36th and 41st respectively, are poised to commence their men’s singles campaign on Wednesday. Moreover, in the women’s singles, world No. 39 Aakarshi Kashyap and Tanya Hemanth are anticipated to partake in their opening-round matches.
In the mixed doubles category, three Indian pairs are set to begin their campaigns, including the noteworthy Commonwealth Games medalists B Sumeeth Reddy and N Sikki Reddy, along with teams Kona Tarun and Sri Krishna Priya Kudaravalli and Ashith Surya and Amrutha Pramuthesh.
